Masters degree in Australia

A master’s degree provides a mastery or full outline of a study field or of a professional practice area. It normally involves one or two years of full-time study.

The country has a national set of education and training programs, which is properly endorsed by the national government. Thus it means that each qualification has national and international recognition.

Majority of universities and private colleges offered higher study courses. However, there are certain fields that only universities offer, such as medicine and architecture. Getting admission in most of the master’s degree courses here is very competitive; hence a high standard of English language skills is mandatory. However, each university or college has different entrance requirements; therefore it’s very important to contact them individually to check these requirements.

The master’s degree is mainly offered in three formats:

•   Masters degree (coursework): These comprise of coursework, project work and research in different combinations. The entry generally requires prior completion of a bachelor degree, or a graduate certificate/diploma.

•   Masters degree (research): These consist of at least two-thirds research and include a substantial thesis or research project, which is mostly assessed externally. Entry requirements generally include a bachelor degree (honours) or master’s preliminary year.

•  Masters degree (extended): These generally include a work-based project. One needs relevant qualification and professional experience, or extensive relevant professional experience for getting entry into this.

General entry requirements for different masters programs:

As mentioned earlier, entry into most higher education programs in Australia is highly competitive. Apart from the academic requirements (as specified above for each qualification level), applicants also need to take care of following things:

  • He/she needs to fulfill high-level English language requirements
  • Several higher education courses have extra entry requirements, like prior knowledge in certain subjects; work experience; or the need to successfully complete an audition, portfolio, test or interview
  • Entry requirements differ for each education provider, thus it’s important to contact individual providers to check
  • Starting dates also vary widely depending on the course. Higher education courses usually run from late February to mid-November. The academic year is usually divided into two semesters, even though there are a few institutions, which operate on a trimester system or offer summer schools from December to February
  • Students mostly enroll for their courses at the beginning of the year (typically in January or February), however, application dates are usually towards the end of the previous year. A number of educational institutions also have a mid-year intake (mostly in July) for some specific courses.
